Former Portuguese international Raul Machado, who wore the shirt of Leixões and Benfica, has died at the age of 86, the Matosinhos and Lisbon teams announced this Sunday.
“It is with deep pain and horror that we received the sad news of the death of Raul Machado, one of the main heroes of our club. Child of the sea, Raul Machado was responsible for the Portuguese Cup won mid-season. “Estadio das Antas before the match with Porto (2:0),” Leixoes recalled in his statement.
Raul Machado “began and ended his career with his beloved club, whose emblem is forever engraved in gold letters,” added Leixoes, the club from which he left for Benfica, playing for the Lisbon side from 1962/63 to 1968. /69.
The former centre-back “joined Benfica at the age of 25 and won six national championships, two Portuguese Cups and four Copa del Rey. During the seven seasons (1962–1969) in which he wore the Benfica shirt, he also represented the national team 11 times. The former defender wore the “glorious” shirt in 265 matches (206 official) and scored five goals,” the Eagles said in their condolences.
According to Benfica, the former central defender’s funeral is scheduled for Monday at 15:15 in the chapel of Santa Casa da Misericordia de Matosinhos, followed by a funeral procession towards the Sendim cemetery.
