Orban compared Hungary’s EU membership to four decades of Soviet rule

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban compared his country’s entry into the European Union to more than four decades of Soviet rule during a speech this Monday marking the anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian uprising against Moscow.

Speaking to a limited group of guests in the town of Veszprém, Orban accused the European Union (EU) of trying to strip Hungary of its identity by imposing a model of liberal democracy that the ruler said Hungarians reject and which is reminiscent of the days of Soviet rule.

“Today there are things appearing that remind us of Soviet times. Yes, it turns out that history is repeating itself,” Orban said at the event, from which all but state media were excluded.
