The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Monday praised Eduardo Ferro Rodriguez, calling him “a good man” and “very honest”, and thanked him for the friendship between them, which began when he was 70 years old. . .
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was the last to speak at the presentation of Eduardo Ferro Rodríguez’s book “Assim Vejo a Minha Vida – Memórias” at the Belém Cultural Center in Lisbon before an audience of friends and “comrades in the struggle” from the former President of the Assembly of the Republic.
“But this has been my fate for about eight years: always surrounded by strange comrades. [anos]”, the head of state noted, causing laughter in the hall, where the Prime Minister and Secretary General of the PS, Antonio Costa, was also in the front row.
In his speech, the President of the Republic put politics aside to focus on friendship, which he argued was “more important than anything else” in life.
“My case is very strange, because we have been friends, close friends, since I was 70 years old. This is extraordinary,” he emphasized.
The head of state said that he disagreed several times with the former chairman of the Assembly of the Republic, although during the coexistence of sovereign bodies they even agreed more than he expected.
“Friendship is actually more important than agreeing, not agreeing, agreeing or disagreeing, and I am honored to have Eduardo Ferro Rodriguez as my friend. Thank you,” he added.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa took over as head of state in 2016, and Ferro Rodriguez presided over the Assembly of the Republic between 2015 and 2022, supporting his re-candidacy for the January 2021 presidential elections.
