Two cargo ships collide off the coast of Germany, leaving people missing

One person was killed and two others were rescued in a search and rescue operation after two cargo ships collided on Tuesday in the North Sea, off the coast of Germany, the local maritime emergency agency said, citing Reuters.

The ships Polesie and Verity collided this morning about 22 kilometers southwest of the island of Heligoland, Germany’s Central Maritime Emergency Command said.

The Verity, which sank according to Maritime Emergency Command Central, left the German city of Bremen and was heading to Immingham, England. “Polesie” sailed from Hamburg to La Coruña in Spain.

According to central command, there were seven people on board the Verity. The search for the four missing people is still ongoing.

According to Reuters, the ship collided with the Polesye at about 5:00 a.m. local time (4:00 a.m. Lisbon time), about 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers) southwest of the island of Heligoland.

According to the central command, there were 22 people on board the Polesie, no one was injured.

The same source reports that one of the rescued men was taken to hospital by land, while the other was also taken to the hospital ward, but on board the German sea rescue boat Hermann Marwede.
