The SDP leader asked the President of the Republic to hold an urgent hearing as he was very concerned by the National Health Service (NHS) chief executive’s warning about the possibility of a “dramatic November” in the sector.
Luis Montenegro said he had already spoken by phone on Tuesday with Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, to whom he requested an urgent hearing, which he said could take place on Wednesday.
“As for the intervention of the executive director of the SNS, we see with great, great, great concern what the main person responsible for managing the system, the SNS, is telling the country, because it would immediately seem to us that this is a cry or about the inability, impotence to solve the problem of organizing the SNS , namely its emergency component,” said the leader of the Social Democrats, speaking to reporters after visiting the Chavez hospital.
Or, he continued, “is this a cry of despair so that the political authorities, the government, the Ministry of Health, the Prime Minister can effectively create conditions for the functioning of an executive council that has spent a year approving its charter and which is clearly not satisfied with the situation with which he collided.”
The chief executive of the National Health Service warned in an interview with newspaper Público that unless doctors reach an agreement with the government, November could be the worst month in 44 years at the SNS.
Fernando Araujo believed that doctors should defend their rights, “but in an ethically impeccable way.”
For the PSD leader, Fernando Araújo’s statement regarding November, which will arrive in seven days, is an occasion to “upset the Portuguese population in a cross-cutting way.”
