The President of the Republic warned this Wednesday that the fragmentation of the right camp could spread to the entire party system in the next political cycle, given that there are “worrying signs” and that it is a “real problem”.
“France is an example. It starts in one hemisphere, destroys what existed in that hemisphere, becomes another reality, and then reaches the other hemisphere. This didn’t happen in Portugal, but it’s good that it didn’t happen. This will not happen,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Souza of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
The head of state made this warning in the middle of his speech at the National Congress of Economists: “It’s good that this is not happening. It’s good that we live at the end of this cycle, and this is the presidential and parliamentary cycle.” A cycle that ends at almost the same time, a cycle marked by fragmentation in two political hemispheres, does not begin.”
“This is a real problem that exists and should not be denied. It only has a solution if the party system actually knows how to deal with it, and it is those who are required to lead their respective hemispheres who will deal with the new realities that have arisen. , which arose,” he believed.
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza added that “from the point of view of strategic planning, especially economic planning, it would not be good if the cycle of striving for stability, despite various external crises, was followed by a cycle consisting of government mini-cycles with party fragmentation and unpredictability functioning of the political system.”
In his opinion, there has come “stability in the political system, in general, in general, both in the political-party system, and stability in coexistence, which has lasted for eight years and it is normal for it to last ten years.” years,” but “there are warning signs.”
“My concerns are expressed, which are already old, dating back to 2018, but which are becoming more and more obvious. And not so long ago, because there are two years left until the end of this cycle – more things, less things, since the final part of the cycle is a huge election cycle, naturally marked by all the events of this election cycle,” he concluded.
Earlier, the President of the Republic recalled that he had been warning for some time about the importance of alternatives in democracy. “I drew the first warning sign in 2018.”
“Democracy only exists when there are alternatives,” he reiterated, arguing that when parts of a system “systematically begin to fragment and collapse,” then “sooner or later the whole system suffers.”
In his speech at the National Congress of Economists, after listening to the Minister of Finance Fernando Medina, the head of state once again praised the draft state budget for 2024, which he described as “a subtle, clear, limited, conditional exercise, in the most difficult period in recent decades, but with maximum preserving the present and thinking as much as possible about the future.”
In his opinion, on this issue, anyone who is “in one of the moderate parties in the hemisphere that is not in power” faces “a call to offer a variety of alternatives, and then feel that the situation, the circumstances of the moment, would not allow much be different from what’s going on.”
