The SDP leadership will be able to elect up to two-thirds of the parliamentary candidates

The PSD leadership will select up to two-thirds of the parliamentary candidates in most constituencies if the charter revision proposal put forward this Wednesday by the National Political Commission (CPN) is approved.

Until now, the SDP charter had not defined a “quota” for the selection of CPN candidates, and this decision was left to the discretion of each leadership, which in practice could impose only the heads of the list or all candidates. .

According to the new proposal to revise the charter, the responsibilities of the CPN now include “approving the criteria for compiling lists of deputies of the Assembly of the Republic, choosing the heads of the lists in each circle, and in circles with more than two deputies, up to two-thirds of the candidates, submitting a corresponding order to the National Council.”

The CPN’s proposal was the only one that was submitted before the end of the deadline, at 18:00 this Wednesday, the party’s general secretary, Hugo Soares, told Lusa.

“This demonstrates a lot of work to involve all structures and all activists in the process of revising the charter,” he said.

The leadership will also have to “approve the appointment of party candidates for the post of chairman of municipal chambers,” as it has done so far, adding another option to the proposal: “appoint them in accordance with the Ethics and Appointment Regulations.” political positions,” another novelty of the proposal that will guide all SDP lists.

The proposal also provides for a single election period for the selection of constituencies and municipalities: after the 2025 municipal elections, elections for municipal and general bodies would have to take place within the next two months (all on the same day), and in the case of constituencies, within the next three months (also simultaneously).

“Mandates expiring on 1 April 2025 shall be extended until elections to be called after local elections,” the proposal states, keeping the duration of all mandates at two years.

As announced, it is expected that activists will not need to renew their membership fees on time to vote in internal elections, they will only need to be active activists – having paid dues for the last two years.

The chapter on sanctions explains the difference between supporters and subscribers of opposition PSD candidates: subscribers are disunited, and supporters are judged by the Councils of First Instance Jurisdiction, also created by this proposal.

The extraordinary congress of the PSD will take place on November 25 at the Municipal Sports Complex of the city of Almada (Setúbal district) and will include amendments to the party charter and analysis of the political situation on the agenda.

All bylaw changes must be approved by a three-fifths majority to be approved.
