Marcelo claims Guterres made statements in accordance with the UN Charter

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said this Wednesday that the consistent statements of UN Secretary-General António Guterres following the Hamas attack in Israel were in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.

In a note published on the official website of the President of the Republic on the Internet, the head of state states that “he has always interpreted the consistent statements of the UN Secretary-General António Guterres made after the unjustified attack.” Hamas in Israel, both in accordance with the defense of the values and principles deriving from the Charter of the United Nations.”

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “confirms his understanding of yesterday’s statements” [terça-feira] and today [quarta-feira]”Secretary General of the United Nations (UN).

The reference is to statements made by António Guterres on Tuesday at the opening of a meeting of the UN Security Council in English, in which he believed that “it is also important to recognize that the Hamas attacks did not occur in a vacuum,” adding that “the Palestinian people for 56 years was subjected to a suffocating occupation.”

The UN Secretary-General stated that “the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the horrific attacks by Hamas,” just as “these horrific attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”

At the start of his speech, António Guterres said that he “unequivocally condemns the horrific and unprecedented terrorist attacks by Hamas in Israel” and that “nothing can justify the deliberate death, injury and kidnapping of civilians – or the firing of rockets at civilians.” ”

In response to these statements at the same meeting, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen accused António Guterres of being out of touch with reality and showing understanding of the October 7 Hamas attack in a “shocking speech.”

On social network X, formerly called Twitter, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan called for the immediate resignation of António Guterres as the organization’s secretary general. This Wednesday, Gilad Erdan announced Israel’s decision not to issue visas to UN representatives in an interview with Israel Army Radio.
