In the American city of Lewiston, Maine, a gunman shot dozens of people and killed at least 22 people. The attack, which shocked the city, took place on Wednesday evening and authorities estimate will lead to more deaths.
The suspect “remains at large,” said Androscoggin County police, who released photos of a white man wearing a brown shirt and dark blue pants and armed with a semi-automatic rifle. The shooting happened in three different locations, including bowlingin the restaurant and in the Walmart Supercenter logistics center.
“We have 22 confirmed deaths and multiple injuries,” Lewiston Mayor Robert McCarthy said early this morning.
Local authorities asked residents to stay home with their doors locked and also published a photo of a white car, calling for communication from citizens who recognized it. The state’s governor, Democrat Janet Mills, said she had been informed of the situation and asked all area residents to follow government recommendations.
Public schools in Lewiston, the state’s second-largest city with a population of about 36,000, will be closed this Thursday.
Since the start of the year, more than 15,000 people have died from gun violence in the country, not including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), an independent group that collects information on gun violence.
