Thirteen people, the vast majority of them teenage students, developed symptoms of sulfur poisoning late Thursday morning in one of the laboratories of the Escola Secundária Damião de Goes school in Alenquera.
The injured were treated by emergency services, 11 of whom were taken to the emergency department of the Vila Franca de Xira Hospital.
Alenquera fire chief Daniel Ribeiro told news agency Lusa that the team was called to the school because there were students in the same class aged between 15 and 16 with “symptoms related to skin irritation, low mood and headaches.” . .
According to the person in charge, environmental measurements were taken “but nothing was found” and the cause of the problem was unknown. Daniel Ribeiro clarified that the students were in the classroom, but did not attend any practical laboratory sessions.
Firefighters from Alenquera, Azambuja and INEM were on the scene, along with 11 first responders and six vehicles.
