Rui Rocha says Guterres’ statements are ‘unfortunate and clumsy’

The leader of the IL considered this Thursday “unfortunate and clumsy” the statements of the UN Secretary General about the conflict between Israel and Hamas, hoping that Antonio Guterres will recover from this moment and receive the “necessary release” to protect civilians.

On Wednesday, IL condemned António Guterres’s “politically senseless and diplomatically disastrous” statements through the party’s social networks, considering them to be “drowning the United Nations in a swamp” and depriving it of its ability to mediate in the conflict.

“I mean the position taken by the party on social networks. What I can say is that the statements made by UN Secretary-General António Guterres were unfortunate statements,” responded Rui Rocha when asked about this party position.

According to the liberal leader, “it is important that in this conflict the UN can be an organization capable of protecting victims, innocents and civilians on all sides of the conflict.”

“When these kinds of clumsy statements appear, in the sense that they represent the normalization of an act of terrorism that has no justification, they end up undermining the role that the UN can play and that is very important, especially in intervening with innocent victims, civilians all sides,” he said.

Rui Rocha also believed that António Guterres “needs to correct” “posts on his own social networks” and “a set of statements” that he “did not create the connection with the cause that he ultimately wanted.”

“It would be desirable that the UN and the Secretary-General himself manage to somehow recover from what I consider a less fortunate moment, and manage to position themselves as the necessary exception, so that exactly what interests need to be protected, and that the UN may have some potential for this, namely civilians,” he urged.

Speaking in English on Tuesday at the opening meeting of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, António Guterres noted that “it is also important to recognize that Hamas attacks did not occur in a vacuum,” adding that “the Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of stifling occupation.”

António Guterres said that “the grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the horrific attacks by Hamas,” just as “these horrific attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”

At the beginning of his speech, the UN Secretary-General said that he “unequivocally condemns the horrific and unprecedented terrorist attacks by Hamas in Israel” and declared that “nothing can justify the deliberate killing, injury and kidnapping of civilians – or the launching of terrorist attacks.” missiles against civilian targets.”

At the same meeting, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen accused António Guterres of being out of touch with reality and showing understanding of the October 7 Hamas attack in a “shocking speech.”

On social network X, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan called for the immediate resignation of António Guterres from the post of Secretary General of this organization.

Gilad Erdan also announced Israel’s decision not to issue visas to UN representatives in an interview with Israel Army Radio.
