The Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security said this Friday that the most recent data shows that there are currently more than five million active workers paying contributions to the social security system.
Ana Méndez Godinho spoke at a hearing of the Budget and Finance and Labour, Social Security and Inclusion committees as part of the overall assessment of the 2024 State Budget Proposal (OE2024).
The official stressed that employment development “has been very dynamic,” adding that the latest data from January to August shows that more than five million workers participated in and paid into the social security system.
By August, the number of foreign workers paying social security contributions had reached a “record number” of 720,000, the minister said.
Mendes Godinho stressed that the unemployment rate is “historically low” at 6.7%, recalling that the government expects it to remain stable next year.
The dynamism of the labor market is reflected in contribution income: the government expects contribution income to be €24 billion by the end of the year, up 13% on the previous year.
Proposal OE2024 will be debated in Parliament on October 30 and 31, with a final global vote scheduled for November 29.
