At least 440,000 people have suffered sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

At least 440 thousand people suffered sexual abuse in the context of the Catholic Church in Spain between 1940 and 2022. The conclusion is based on an investigation by the Office of the Ombudsman, which conducted more than eight thousand interviews and which was presented this Friday. in parliament, in Madrid.

The report was presented by service provider Angel Gabilondo, which showed that 1.13% of adults in Spain were abused when they were minors. Of this number, more than half of these people were victims of violence at the hands of priests or other religious elements, and the rest were victims of lay people working in church institutions.

The panelist explained that a total of 487 victims, 87% of whom were men, reported sexual abuse in the Church to the victim assistance department of the commission established by the institution, and that 11.7% of respondents were victims of sexual abuse in childhood or adolescence, predominantly in a family environment. Gabilondo proposed creating a government compensation fund for victims “who deserve to be heard, cared for and compensated.”
