Paulo Raimundo believes that it will be difficult to reach an agreement with doctors if the government remains “intransigent and arrogant”

The PKP secretary-general on Monday said it would be difficult to find solutions in negotiations with doctors if the government “maintains its attitude of intransigence, arrogance and blackmail.”

Paulo Raimundo spoke this Monday morning at the doors of the Baixa da Baneira health center in the municipality of Moita, where users have been queuing, some since midnight, to open the doors and receive one of the 25 available passwords. for consultations.

“Intransigence, arrogance and blackmail. If the government reverses this with good faith, care and effort to solve the problem of users and doctors, then we will have a way out. If this idea of arrogance and blackmail continues, it will be difficult to find solutions,” the communist leader said while talking to reporters.

The government and doctors’ union structures met on Sunday, the meeting was suspended and resumed on Tuesday.

Paulo Raimundo also said the government was trying to shift responsibility for the problems of the NHS to doctors, when in fact “the only responsibility lies with the government.”

“People here know that the doctors, the few that exist, the nurses, the few that exist, are doing everything they have and everything they can to try to protect the lives of these people. The government can exert pressure and blackmail as much as you want, so that there is no disagreement between users, doctors and nurses,” he emphasized.

The fundamental issue at the moment, defended the PPC secretary-general, is recruiting more doctors into the NHS, not just in emergencies.

According to the Baixa da Baneira Health Services Users Commission, the situation with access to health care at the Baixa da Baneira primary health care unit has been deteriorating since July 2022, a month in which six doctors left to provide services, significantly increasing the number users, not a family doctor.

This medical center, explained a representative of the commission, lacks 14 doctors.

“At the moment we have four permanent doctors, two retired doctors with semi-term contracts and an agreement with Santa Casa da Misericórdia that provides service here 40 hours a week,” he said, adding that Baixa da Baneira has 26,288 users. , but only 6,371 people have a family doctor.

In order for users to make an appointment, they have to go to the doors of the medical center and form lines in the early morning, often unable to do so, repeating the procedure on subsequent days.
