Livre abstains from voting on the state budget as a whole and expects “hard work” in his specialty

Livre’s only MP will abstain from voting on most of the 2024 state budget proposals, warning of the need for “hard work” in a specialty that will determine the party’s final position.

“Livret will not turn down the opportunity to improve this budget, which it will do in good faith and in a constructive spirit, and will therefore abstain from voting altogether,” Livret said in a statement sent to Lusa.

On Monday evening, the Livre convened its Assembly – the highest body between congresses – to complete the process of voting on most of the OE2024 proposals, which takes place in parliament on Tuesday and guaranteed the approval of a majority of the PS.

“The work ahead of us, on our part, on the part of the government and the PS, will be difficult so that this general abstention does not turn into a vote against in the last global vote,” warns the party, which believes that “The distance between this budget and the current the needs of the country are very great.”

Livre said it found “worrying gaps” in the budget proposal “in response to a social emergency, particularly housing and child poverty, underinvestment in education and health” and “gross policy inadequacies.” for science and higher education necessary to prepare the future of the country.”

As positive developments, Livre mentions “increasing funds available to combat climate change (albeit against a background of declining funds allocated to nature conservation, environmental protection and biodiversity protection), as well as the creation of an Investment Fund, which answers Livre’s question about the use of budget surplus.”

“Finally, we note the Prime Minister’s statement of readiness to deepen the path that Livre has already taken in the creation of the National Rail Pass and in the field of transport, and in general the openness shown by the government to negotiate on the specialty. “, the message says.

The party believes that throughout this legislature it has been “at the forefront of proposing innovative solutions and fighting for greater environmental and social justice”, listing amendment proposals presented in previous budget processes such as “exploring and experimenting with a four-day week. national rail pass, program 3C – Home, comfort and climate, increase in family allowance for single-parent families or unemployment benefits for victims of domestic violence.”

On the first day of debate on much of the 2024 budget proposal (OE2024), Livre called on the government to apply a property tax surcharge to “global millionaire” buyers, “non-residents and non-taxpayers” whose income is intended to be used to help resolve housing crisis – while the Prime Minister renounces any “fiscal persecution of foreigners.”

Later in the debate, António Costa told the single MP that the government was ready to discuss some of its proposed budget amendments, emphasizing that this had happened in previous budget exercises.

Livre abstained from proposing the 2023 state budget, having managed to secure approval for some of its ad hoc changes, namely the already existing national rail pass for regional trains costing 49 euros.

During the discussion of the state budget for 2022, in which it also abstained, the party received the green light to extend unemployment benefits for victims of domestic violence, approved by the Council of Ministers on October 19.

The final global vote on the 2024 government budget is scheduled for November 29.
