The orthopedic emergency department at Chavez Hospital closed in November.

The orthopedic emergency department at the Hospital de Chaves will close in November due to the need to concentrate orthopedic medical resources in the Vila Real Hospital unit, it was announced on Tuesday.

The Tras os Montes and Alto Douro Hospital Center (CHTMAD), which combines the two departments, said that “due to the current situation of shortage of specialists, it is necessary to concentrate existing orthopedic medical resources in the event of an emergency with the Vila Real Hospital Department.”

This measure, according to CHTMAD, aims to “maximize the efficiency of care”, for which the “National Health Service (SNS) network response” is activated in a rational manner.

“Consequently, this service will not be available in the Chaves Hospital department in November,” the hospital center adds.

The cities of Chávez and Vila Real are approximately 70 kilometers apart and are connected by the 24 motorway (A24).

The hospital center’s statement was published on social networks and addressed to the population in the area of influence of the Chávez Hospital, which corresponds to the municipalities of Chávez, Boticas, Montalegre and Valpasos.

CHTMAD requests that all users, before contacting the emergency service, first contact the SNS line 24 – 808242424, which will provide advice and referral in case of illness or medication.

He also asks that in urgent or emergency situations, contact 112 and wait for instructions from the operator.

On Saturday, hundreds of residents and mayors of Alto Tamega wore black T-shirts and protested against the closure of Chavez’s hospitals, planned for November, due to the inability of doctors to work overtime in addition to the 150 required by law.

In addition to the closure of the emergency orthopedic department confirmed today, the closure of other services such as emergency medical-surgical care and acute pediatric care, the latter having closed at various periods since Easter, caring for pediatric patients, may also be at stake. users will be carried out at the CHTMAD headquarters in Vila Real.
