The PSD deputy elected from Vila Real, André Márquez, wants to know what solutions the Ministry of Health is preparing to stop the further closure of services at the Chávez Hospital, which will not have emergency orthopedic care in November.
The Social Democrat asked the Ministry of Health, submitted to the Assembly of the Republic and published this Thursday, about the repeated closure of services at the Chaves Hospital, located in the Tras os Montes and Alto Douro Hospital Center (CHTMAD), with its registered office in Vila Real.
On Tuesday evening, the CHTMAD administration informed the population in the hospital’s catchment area (Chaves, Boticas, Montalegre and Valpasos) that the orthopedic emergency department will be closed in the month of November due to the need to concentrate medical resources in orthopedics in Vila Real. .
A measure that is due, according to the administration, to “the current context of unpreparedness of specialists,” that is, the unwillingness of doctors to work overtime beyond the 150 hours required by law.
As well as the closure of the emergency orthopedic department, other services could be at stake in November, such as the emergency department and the pediatric ward, the latter having closed at various times since Easter, with care for pediatric users to be carried out in the emergency department assistance from the Vila Real Hospital.
Andre Marquez stressed that PSD deputies are “deeply concerned about the critical situation that has developed in the Chavez hospital department,” believing that it “represents a significant threat to the quality of medical care provided to the population.”
“The lack of medical resources is obvious and has seriously undermined the hospital’s ability to meet the needs of the local population,” he said.
According to the parliamentarian, “this situation not only jeopardizes the efficiency of hospital services in Chávez, but also causes great concern among the population living in the municipalities of Boticas, Chávez, Montalegre and Valpazos, as well as in the areas of Vila Pouca de Aguiar.” and Ribeira de Pena”, municipalities included in the intermunicipal community of Alto Tamega and Barroso.
“This concern is further compounded by the specific characteristics of this region with an aging population, limited available resources and high rates of comorbidities,” he added.
Therefore, the MP wants to know what “decisions are being prepared to prevent further closures of services” and what “structural planning and response measures” the Ministry of Health, in coordination with the board of directors of CHTMAD, “should” stop once and for all the consistent closure of services in the department of the Chaves Hospital.”
“What decisions are under consideration by the Ministry of Health and what instructions and justifications has it given to the board of directors of CHTMAD to strengthen and not weaken the hospital unit in Chavez,” he further asked.
On Saturday, hundreds of residents and mayors of Alto Tamega wore black T-shirts and protested against the closure of Chavez’s hospitals, planned for November, due to the inability of doctors to work overtime in addition to the 150 required by law.
