Montenegro says possible agreement with doctors is ‘palliative’ to social media chaos

This Thursday, the SDP president said that a possible agreement between the government and doctors will not solve the underlying problems of the National Health Service and is a “palliative” to manage the chaos that exists in the sector.

“The agreement will not solve the NHS’s most pressing problems. [SNS]even in emergency situations,” Luis Montenegro told reporters, stressing, however, the need to stabilize the careers of doctors, as well as to attract and retain professionals in the public service.

The SDP leader once again defended the need to achieve mutual understanding in the country, involving the public, social and private sectors, “so that everyone can perform the public service of providing citizens with access to urgent and emergency medical care.”

“Until that’s done, we’ll be here with Band-Aids. Speaking of health, this is a kind of palliative care that does not solve the problem itself, but only manages the chaos that, unfortunately, has reigned in the National Health Service,” he argued.

A round of talks between the government and medical unions that was scheduled for Friday has been postponed until Saturday at the request of the National Federation of Doctors (Fnam), the Ministry of Health said today.

Negotiations between the Ministry of Health and trade unions began in 2022, but the lack of an agreement has intensified doctors’ struggle with strikes and claims to justify overtime work beyond the mandatory 150 hours a year, causing confusion and the closure of emergency services in hospitals across the country.
