The President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, this Thursday called the Azores “one of the best laboratories in the world” for deep-sea research, about which little is still known.
“The Azores is truly one of the best laboratories in the world to understand what the deep sea is, its riches, the risks it faces and its potential, and therefore science and technology, that is, not only fundamental knowledge, but and An advanced collaborative project with applied research is absolutely necessary,” emphasized Santos Silva at the end of his visit to Okeanos, the Marine Sciences Research Institute of the University of the Azores in Horta.
The President of the Assembly of the Republic, who began a four-day visit to the archipelago on Wednesday, explained to Okeanos researchers and staff that he advocates the creation of a “global ocean agenda,” a kind of “innovative legal treaty.” international”, which regulates all types of activities carried out at sea.
“The global agenda for the ocean must embrace and connect these areas, it must come from an environmental point of view, but also from an economic point of view, but also from an environmental and ecosystem protection point of view, and also from a geopolitical and security point of view, which are obvious “, Santos Silva insisted.
Oceans are not only “beds of biodiversity,” he added, but also fundamental spaces for the development of the energy transition and the fight against climate change, which must be regulated in terms of public policy.
