Portugal refuses to release two wanted by Belgium for murder

The Supreme Court has refused to release for extradition two Brazilians detained by the SP three weeks ago in Portugal, who in 2022 killed a Moroccan in Brussels, Belgium. Igor Monteiro, 24, and Jefferson Macedo, 21, are accused of stabbing 20-year-old Muad El-Grich on November 28 after the Brazil-Switzerland World Cup game.

The Brazilians intended to celebrate their victory (1:0) with fireworks, and the Moroccan asked them not to disturb people. He was killed by blows to the throat and chest. Igor and Jefferson fled to Portugal, where they lived for 11 months and already had jobs. The defense argued in the Supreme Court that they were innocent and that in Belgium the sentence could be indefinite. They are afraid that the victim’s friends will kill them.
