BE accuses government of committing ‘consistent violations’ of RTP workers’ rights

Bloco de Esquerda coordinator Mariana Mortagua accused the government this Friday of committing “consistent violations” of the labor rights of RTP workers, demonstrating solidarity with the workers’ strike for fair wages.

“There are consistent violations of the law, consistent violations of labor rights, and they go against every word of what the government says about labor rights, decent work and the need for higher wages in Portugal, and that is why this fight is so important and it is why we want to be here to support the RTP workers who are not tired and who persevere in this fight,” said Mariana Mortagua from Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto district.

This afternoon, the bloc leader joined about two dozen RTP workers who gathered at the gates of the Northern Production Center in Vila Nova de Gaia to demand better working conditions and higher wages.

Mariana Mortagua believes that the struggle of RTP workers is also “a struggle of solidarity to attract into the careers of precarious people who have not had a contract for years” and who live in situations that no one would want for themselves.

Mariana Mortagua also found the RTP administration’s failure to comply with the law unacceptable.

“It is unacceptable that RTP not only fail to comply with the law, that they remain unstable and unstable despite working from home for many years, that wages remain low, that civil servants are not recognized as eligible for career advancement and that then when these workers go on strike and want to fight for their rights, RTP, which is a public company, will do everything to prevent this strike,” he said.

During today’s RTP workers’ strike, Nelson Silva, an RTP worker and leader of the National Union of Telecommunications and Audiovisual Workers (CGTP-affiliated Sinttaw), said into a microphone that the minimum wage was “820 euros” and that the RTP wage scale was “805 euro”, that is, “the RTP salary loss was about 85%.”

The union leader said RTP is a company with a “history of severe instability” and that it has not even taken advantage of opportunities provided, such as the Public Administration Emergency Regularization of Precarious Linkages Program (PREVPAP).

“Prevpap was another one of those failed opportunities. Of the 404 applications we had for Prevpap, only 270 were confirmed,” leading unions to file a complaint regarding “140 cases with the ACT,” he told Nelson. Silvia.

RTP workers are today on the second day of a seven-day strike to protest against the lack of career progression and wage increases called for by Sinttav and also supported by the USI-affiliated Independent Trade Union of Information and Communication Workers (SITIC). .

On 14 October, the first day of the RTP workers’ strike, Nelson Silva criticized RTP’s lack of transparency, saying the company was using data protection to avoid revealing how much managers and directors earned compared to the BBC. salary information, account expenses (eg Uber) and declaration of interests are available on your website.

As for the reasons for the strike, Nelson Silva said at the time that the company’s argument is always that it has “no money” for either career advancement or salary increases, when, according to him, the company has “419 people earning more than 5,000 Euro gross.”

Lusa tried to get the RTP administration to respond to the statements of Deputy Mariana Mortagua, but so far this has not been possible.
