Cape Verdean President calls for protection of war victims and strengthened environmental protection

This Monday, the President of Cape Verde called for greater protection for war victims, as well as greater environmental protection, in a State of the Union address that marks the double anniversary of defense and environmental protection in an uncertain global context.

“Today the world is going through dark, uncertain and risky days, with serious and revealing episodes of complete disregard for life, especially women and children,” said José Maria Neves, alluding to wars, calling for “empathy and compassion for the victims” according to “ protection of human rights enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic.”

Cape Verde celebrates National Defense Day on November 6 with a concept that goes beyond the purely military sphere and embraces other threats, “unifying living forces around common national goals” such as the fight against disease, poverty and the overall defense of human rights.

“Currently, we are still facing problems in housing, health, environmental sanitation, drought, inflation, unstable inter-island connections and others,” he said, pointing to these as challenges to defense in a broader perspective.

“We must follow together the entire society mobilized in the country and also count on the presence of the diaspora to defend Cape Verde. It is always good to see Cape Verdeans participating in all the struggles in defense of this nation,” he added.

Today’s agenda of the head of state is full of visits to the Red Cross, the Cape Verdean Ministry of Health Program to get rid of malaria, as well as volunteer sites in the UN system.

Today also marks the International Day for the Prevention of Exploitation of the Environment during Wars and Armed Conflicts.

In the same message, José Maria Neves uses his status as a “champion” of the African Union (AU) for the conservation of natural and cultural heritage – a distinction from that continental body – to call for “good global management of natural resources within the framework of conflict prevention, peacekeeping and peacebuilding “

“This is the foundation of sustainable development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, as well as the Africa we want to champion in the African Union Agenda 2063,” he concluded.
