Heavy rain filled dams in the north and center

Heavy rain recorded in late October and early this month from six storms filled dams in the north and center of the country. There are even six dams with 100 percent storage capacity. Three in the Tagus Basin (Belver, Capinha and Cova do Viriato), two in the Douro (Serra Cerrada and Vilar Tabuaçu) and one in Mondego (Lagoa Comprida).

In terms of the national average, the Portuguese Environmental Agency’s weekly bulletin shows storage at 74%, down from 71% on 31 October.

At the country’s three largest dams, the dynamics were also positive over the week: Alqueva on the Guadiana River increased from 70 to 71%, Baixo Sabor from 90 to 91% and Castelo de Bode (Zesere – a tributary of the Tagus) from 81 to 84%.

Although the Sado River basin’s volume is below the twenty-year average of 45%, it recorded the largest increase in the country last week, from 28% to 39%.

Despite the heavy rains, five dams, all in the south of the country, remain in the red: Campillas (6%), Bravura and Monte da Rocha (8%), and Vigia and Arade (15%).
