The PNP charged two women, aged 41 and 69, living in Santa Maria da Feira and Ovar, Aveiro district, on suspicion of committing the crime of fraud, security forces said on Thursday.
In a statement, the GNR clarified that as part of the investigation into the fraud that occurred in Wiesel in 2022, the military guards carried out police investigations that allowed the identification of suspects as well as their location.
A GNR source explained to Lusa that both women are suspected of involvement in an Internet romance scam, the victim of which was a woman living in the municipality of Vizela, Braga district.
According to the same source, this woman met a man through social networks with whom she fell in love and who asked him for money to solve some legal problems, showing him the bank accounts of two women who were now defendants. .
According to investigators, the victim transferred “more than 40 thousand euros” to these accounts, and most of the money was transferred to an account belonging to a man living in England, which leaves suspicions “with interest.”
During a search of the suspects’ home on Wednesday, GNR officials seized two mobile phones and three bank documents related to the crime under investigation.
The two women were charged and the facts were forwarded to the Department of Investigations and Criminal Cases of Guimarães.
