Chega will hold his sixth congress from January 12 to 14 in Lisbon, party president André Ventura announced this Friday, indicating that he will be a re-candidate for the leadership position.
“I have asked the Council on behalf of the National Authority, which met yesterday, to continue holding the elective congress on January 12, 13 and 14,” he said while addressing reporters at the Chegi headquarters.
Andre Ventura noted that the sixth main meeting of Chegi will take place in Lisbon and on the agenda will be the elections of the party’s president, which he has already announced that he will reapply for, as well as the national bodies.
This congress will take place one year after the last congress, which took place in Santarem, and after the Constitutional Court declared the convening of this major meeting invalid.
President Chegi said that the National Directorate would convene the National Council, which in turn would decide to formally schedule the congress, and stated that he believed that the Constitutional Court would not interfere with this this time.
“The National Council had 70 members, now there are 30, everything is as indicated by the Constitutional Court,” he said.
This meeting of the party’s highest body will approve the program that Chega will present for the early legislative elections on March 10, and Andre Ventura admitted this Friday that he may announce “some names” that will appear on the lists of candidates. for deputies who will be approved by the National Directorate.
When asked about the possibility of an opposition in the leadership race, leader Chegi acknowledged the possibility but said the party needed “unity and consensus” to present itself as an “alternative to the PS.”
André Ventura believed that he had “done a great job” in his four years leading Chegu, “a party united around its president”, and was convinced that he would win the internal elections.
President Chegi noted that he did not want any doubts to arise about his legitimacy as party leader and stressed that “he must provide evidence of internal democracy.”
Chega’s sixth major meeting will take place the weekend after the PS convention, scheduled for January 6 and 7.
