The President of the Republic announced this Friday an increase in the national minimum wage from the current 760 euros to 820 euros from January 2024, a decree approved on Thursday by the government, a source in Belem told Lusa.
“The President of the Republic promulgated this Friday a government decree raising the national minimum wage,” reads a one-sentence note that has since been published on the official website of the President of the Republic on the Internet.
On Thursday, according to a statement from the Council of Ministers, “a decree-law was approved defining the increase of the national minimum wage to 820 euros from 1 January 2024, in accordance with the commitments made within the framework of the Strengthening the Medium-Term Agreement on increasing incomes, wages and competitiveness” .
“This increase represents an increase of 60 euros per month and corresponds to the largest increase in the minimum guaranteed monthly wage ever observed – 7.9%,” the government statement highlights.
This announcement comes in the context of a political crisis, with the Prime Minister tendering his resignation on Tuesday, which was accepted by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, but has not yet been officially published in the Diário da República. at this point the government will limit itself to acts of governance.
In his address to the country on Thursday, the head of state said he would delay the government’s resignation process to ensure approval and entry into force of the 2024 government budget proposal, which is scheduled for a final global vote on November 29.
The update of the national minimum wage is set by government decree after consultation with the social partners.
The amount of 820 euros for next year is included in the agreement signed in October as part of the social consultation between the government and the social partners, with the exception of the CGTP and the CIP – Confederação Empresarial de Portugal, which were not taken into account.
