Environment Minister Duarte Cordeiro said this Monday that he was in parliament presenting the state budget for 2024 (OE2024) out of a “sense of duty” and recalled that a future government could change it.
Speaking at the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic, at the joint hearings of the Budget and Finance Committees and the Environment and Energy Committees as part of the discussion of the OE2024 specialty, the Minister began with a reminder that the Government is resigning following the resignation of the Prime Minister.
“The future government will have its own program and will naturally be able to change this budget, the Environment Fund options and some of the investments planned in public funds in accordance with its government program,” he said in his initial speech.
Duarte Cordeiro stressed that climate action and environmental policies are “crucial for the future” of the country, then explained the main figures and options for the budget proposal.
According to the minister, this is a budget that encourages the use of public transport, which protects forests, reduces the use of polluting materials and greenhouse gas emissions, and “stabilizes prices and protects families and businesses.”
The Minister recalled the financing of the sector and the new features of the document in the field of urban mobility and promotion of public transport, in the field of energy and climate, waste and circular economy or in the field of water resources, as well as conservation of nature and forests.
