Montenegro says next government cannot be hostage to extremism

On Monday, the PSD president said Portugal’s next government cannot be hostage to extremism, neither right nor left, and stressed that people need not be afraid of the PSD.

“I think it is very good for Portugal that the next government will not be hostage to extremism and we must ensure that there will be no gimmick 2.0 compared to the original government of 2015,” Luis Montenegro said during a gathering of activists in Albufeira , in the district of Faro.

According to the PSD leader, the initial “cunning”, which “lasted eight years, first accompanied and then alone, is responsible for the impoverishment of the country with nationalization and stubborn politics from an ideological point of view.”

On the other hand, he stressed, people “don’t need to be afraid of the SDP, because it is the party of positive transformation of their lives, the party of non-conformity, free enterprise, regulation and social care.”

“Even in areas where they are trying to give us a bad reputation by taking a more aggressive position, it is necessary to make it clear to people that the PSD was the party that contributed to the largest increase in pensions in Portugal, which was the 14th month, decided by the governments of Professor Cavaco Silva,” – he noted.

Luis Montenegro assured that he will not be prime minister “on the day when he has to reduce his pension, and this should not scare people.”

In his speech concluding the first day of the Sentir Portugal no Algarve initiative, Luis Montenegro noted that the country is entering an electoral period that “is the exclusive responsibility of the Socialist Party, a party that, in its third consecutive legislature with an absolute majority, has managed to win such great confidence which he received from voters.”

“It is truly amazing how completely exceptional conditions are set aside for the sake of good deeds,” he said.

After criticizing socialist rule, “with several problems facing the country” in the National Health Service, education, housing and high tax burden, Montenegro promised, if the PSD became government, to “evaluate some careers that are blocked, give hope to young people and abolish some measures” approved by the PS.

According to Luis Montenegro, the PS government has “violated all conditions for investment in Portugal” by improving the ability of companies to stimulate development to retain young people.

“None of us caused any disturbances involving the government until this week. The government fell this week because of everything that has happened so far, this was the last straw,” he stressed.

Luis Montenegro also stated that “the despair of the PS is total, every day, because even today [segunda-feira] there is a resignation of a member of the government who two days ago said that he would not resign under any circumstances.”

“Poor governance is also the responsibility of those who have followed the government in recent years. It’s just that listening to some people, it seems that for the last eight years they have not sat down to discuss and make decisions,” he said.

Addressing activists, Montenegro recalled that “today it is in the hands of the party” to force Portugal to change its government.

“This is what is in our hands to do today before March 10th. [de 2024]”, he concluded.

Portugal will hold early legislative elections on March 10, 2024, scheduled by the President of the Republic, following the resignation of the Prime Minister on Tuesday.
