The President of the Republic announced an increase in salaries for civil servants

This Monday, the President of the Republic promulgated a government decree establishing an increase in the salaries of public administration employees for the next year by at least 52 euros or 3%.

A note published on the presidential website states that the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has issued a government charter that “establishes a change in the base of remuneration and an update of the level of remuneration of civil servants.”

The Council of Ministers approved on Thursday, despite the current political crisis, an increase in the salaries of public administration workers next year by at least 52 euros or 3%.

“A decree-law was approved establishing measures for the assessment of employees performing public functions, changing the wage base and updating the amount of remuneration for civil servants for 2024 as part of compliance with salary negotiations,” the council said in a statement. ministers.

According to the government, “this change to the remuneration base to €821.83 and the update of public service remuneration for 2024 again goes beyond the commitments made in the Multi-Year Agreement to increase the value of public administration employees in 2022.” “.

The proposal, agreed with trade unions, calls for an increase from 6.8% of the remuneration base for civil servants to 3% for senior officials.

According to the statement, a decree-law was also approved approving measures to improve the qualifications of workers in a number of special professions, negotiations on which were carried out between the government and the relevant trade unions.

“The Government recognizes the need for the pay increases made in the general senior technical career to have the same impact even in 2023 for this set of specialist occupations,” it says.

The approval by the Council of Ministers came in the midst of a political crisis. The Prime Minister resigned on Tuesday after learning that his name had been mentioned by those involved in the prosecutor’s investigation into the Lithium, Hydrogen and Sines data centers, prompting the President of the Republic to dissolve the Assembly of the Republic and convene the legislature. elections on March 10.
