The Judicial Police (PJ) of Lisbon, through its homicide department, arrested a 37-year-old man who set fire to a homeless man in the Anjos area, causing him fatal burns.
The crime, which was filmed, took place in the early hours of March 3 this year in a tunnel in the Anjos area. The suspect and the victim, a 51-year-old resident of Rwanda, were in an argument. The Portuguese took advantage of the fact that his opponent was sleeping and used a lighter to set fire to the card on which the victim lay. He did nothing to help the victim, who was struggling with his burning body. Other homeless people called PSP and INEM. The Rwandan’s condition was stabilized and taken to the burn unit of a San Jose hospital, where he died two days later.
Witnesses and CCTV images at least helped police inspectors find and arrest the suspect. He was held in pre-trial detention.
