The union accuses the Ministry of Health of using nurses for election campaigning

The Nurses’ Union (NU) this Wednesday criticized the Ministry of Health (MoH) for using nurses to campaign for elections, noting that “it is not negotiating with anyone” and holding “fruitless meetings”.

“After months of no response to the calls of the Nurses’ Union, we are faced with news of a proposed meeting at which unrealistic measures are announced and which in practice only serve to pit nurses against nurses,” said the SE president. Pedro Costa, quoted in the statement.

SE’s comments come after the Portuguese Nurses’ Union (SEP) met on Tuesday with the guardianship authorities and decided on a concentration with the Ministry of Health on November 21 at 11:00.

“When the Ministry of Health secretly tries to hold fruitless meetings with any trade union structure, it does not negotiate with anyone,” emphasized Pedro Costa.

The union leader recalled that the last negotiation meeting with the ministry took place in early September, “when the new model of the USF organization was presented, without any negotiations.” [Unidades de Saúde Familiar]”.

Since September, he recalled, there has been no response to letters from the GP requesting the resumption of negotiations with the intention of resolving the issue of scoring when assessing the performance of nurses, on the date of transition to nursing and special nursing profession. care.

According to Pedro Costa, Health Minister Manuel Pizarro and his team are “simply selling illusions, promising measures that they know they will not be able to implement before the elections, perhaps already wanting to carry out an election campaign, but above all the desire to divide nurses, set them against each other in order to, in the end, take responsibility for measures that are empty in content.”

In Portugal, on March 10, 2024, early elections will be held for legislative bodies appointed by the President of the Republic after the resignation of the Prime Minister.

The trade union leader also added that the GP “has always been ready for dialogue and discussion of specific measures,” recalling that “it is necessary to urgently resolve” the issue of concluding a Collective Agreement, suspended since 2017.

“There are hundreds of violations that affect thousands of colleagues who, as a result, cannot advance their careers and regain some of the lost time,” he emphasized, pointing out that there is an urgent need to “value the profession through, for example, mechanisms for recognizing the risks and difficulties of the profession “

Pedro Costa accused MS of creating “a comic soap opera, once again making promises that are nothing but for some.”

“This is another fable, an illusion that deceives only the most unwary. (…) It is important that nurses remain united, fighting together for the same cause (…) That they do not allow themselves to be deceived by empty promises of content and limited in their delivery,” he challenged.
