The leader of the Liberal Initiative, Rui Rocha, this Thursday accused the President of the Assembly of the Republic of interfering with justice and of being “a kind of supporter of the interests of the PS or a faction of the PS.”
Rui Rocha responded in Parliament to an interview given by Augusto Santos Silva to RTP3 television on Wednesday evening, in which he expressed the opinion that the Supreme Court (STJ) should quickly, before the elections, clarify the criminal situation of Prime Minister Antonio. Costa, emphasizing that the case opened a political crisis.
“This attempt to set deadlines for the investigation is clearly interference. We don’t know what we’re talking about, I hope Augusto Santos Silva knows as much about this issue as I do, and if we don’t know how can we talk about what’s at stake. Is this something simple that can be expedited and completed in three to four months, or is it something more complex, in-depth, requiring a longer investigation?” asked the IL leader.
According to Rui Rocha, “the establishment of a deadline for the administration of justice is neither worthy nor acceptable on the part of a second actor of the state.”
The IL President acknowledged that there were problems in the justice system, but considered the PS a “primary responsibility.”
“We must understand that problems in the justice sector are dealt with seriously, at the right time, and not by conducting an investigation, because that is not the proper role of those who share power, those who have independence, it is the proper role of those who are members fan base. And this is unacceptable for the President of the Assembly of the Republic,” he criticized.
In the same interview, Augusto Santos Silva publicly expressed his support for PS leadership candidate José Luis Carneiro.
Rui Rocha believed that during his mandate the President of the Parliament “always wore the PS shirt” and that “now it seems that it is no longer enough for him to wear the PS shirt, he is still in the PS faction” and that this is “not typical for the President of the Parliament”.
The Liberal leader lamented the lack of a formal official mechanism to discuss the behavior of the President of the Assembly of the Republic in Parliament, believing that he is a statesman “least subject to any investigation or censorship.” .
Rui Rocha also accused Santos Silva of wanting to “bailout himself for personal gain” and present himself as “one of the owners of the regime.”
“But there is no formal mechanism to discuss this, for example, in parliament with the Chairman of the Assembly himself. The conclusion is that he must have this standard of dignity in his functions. And if he wants to continue to be if you are a leader of support on behalf of the PS or on behalf of a faction of the PS, then you should really take the exam because you support in other types of contexts and not in the role of President of the Assembly of the Republic.” , he asserted.
