Student who attempted to attack the Faculty of Science in Lisbon was released

João Carreira, a 20-year-old man tried for plotting a terrorist attack on the Faculty of Sciences in Lisbon in February 2022, was released on parole this Thursday from the Caxias prison hospital in Oeiras.

The young man is subject to the pardon regime applied in connection with the visit of Pope Francis to Portugal this year. A student who served 2 years and 9 months in prison for possessing a prohibited weapon has been acquitted of terrorism offenses and will receive a year’s pardon.

The decision came after an inquiry into the case by his lawyer, Jorge Pracana. His parents expected Joao Carreira to leave the Caxias prison hospital, with whom he went home.

The young man has been in custody since February 2022.
