A man in his 50s escaped with minor injuries after a collision with a railway vehicle that occurred on the Northern Line in Vale de Figueira, municipality of Santarem, at 9:30 pm on Sunday. According to CM As it turned out, the man was walking along the railway tracks when he was caught by a train, which stopped as soon as the driver noticed the collision.
The victim was rescued at the scene by emergency services and taken by train to a nearby level crossing near the Vale de Figueira football field, from where he was taken by ambulance to Santarem Hospital.
Traffic on the Northern Line was restricted while relief operations continued but returned to normal around 11pm.
VMER personnel from the Santarem hospital and the resources of the Santarem firefighters, Pernes volunteer firefighters, Infrastructure Portugal and the GNR, which is investigating the incident, were at the scene.
