The President of the Order of Physicians (OM) said this Monday that negotiations between unions and the government are taking “too much time” and said that reaching an agreement is “absolutely imperative.”
“I think, firstly, that an agreement is absolutely necessary. It is imperative that the Ministry of Health and the Government take the right steps to address the problem that is now occurring in a more serious form in the NHS. [SNS]”Carlos Cortes said regarding the resumption of negotiations between the Ministry of Health and the unions representing doctors on Thursday.
At the end of a visit to the Pedro Espano Hospital in Matosinhos, Porto district, Carlos Cortés mentioned that there are working conditions that are under review and which the Ministry of Health must respect.
“I think that at this moment the government and the Ministry of Health have no alternative but to present concrete decisions that need to be taken,” given that the negotiations have been going on “too long” and that because of this the consequences for Social Networks are “catastrophic.”
Speaking about what is necessary to reach an agreement between doctors’ unions and the government, the president emphasized that there is a lack of responsibility and competence on the part of the Ministry of Health.
According to the official, “the government cannot abdicate its responsibility as the country cannot wait, given that there is an urgent need to resolve the problems of the SNA at this time.”
On Friday, the Health Ministry announced it would resume negotiations with unions representing doctors on November 23 following requests from union leaders for an immediate resumption of negotiations.
The round of negotiations will involve Health Minister Manuel Pizarro and Health Minister Ricardo Mestre, the Health Ministry said in a statement.
Earlier on Tuesday, the health minister will host unions at a technical meeting on two new topics: regulation of family health care facilities and comprehensive responsibility centers.
The Independent Union of Doctors (SIM) and the National Federation of Doctors (Fnam) have demanded the resumption of negotiations with the guardianship because they believe that the government is fully functional and should not shift the problems of the SNA onto the shoulders of the next leader.
The last meeting between the Ministry of Health and medical unions was scheduled for November 8, but was canceled after Prime Minister Antonio Costa resigned.
