Lisbon’s Christmas lights will open on November 30 and will remain on until Twelfth Day, January 6, with a reduced operating schedule to save money and energy efficiency, the city council announced this Monday.
“Lisbon will be illuminated in traditional places, including squares, streets and avenues, using low-energy lamps based on LED technology, saving about 80% of energy compared to incandescent technology,” the municipality said in response to Lusa.
According to the Lisbon City Council (CML), the unveiling of the Christmas lights is scheduled for November 30 at 7:00 pm in Terreiro do Paço, “followed by a Christmas-themed angel concert and fireworks display.” , with free entry.
As in previous years, the “Christmas Illuminations” initiative is being promoted through a protocol between the municipality and the Union of Associations of Commerce and Services (UACS) with an investment of 749,500 euros, “the same amount as in recent years”, announced the municipality, chaired by Carlos Moedasa (SDP).
“HML, while continuing energy conservation and efficiency measures, will keep the Christmas lights operating at a reduced rate as last year, but will move them forward by half an hour at the request of traders and UACS,” he said.
According to the municipality, the Christmas lights will be open from 17:30 to 23:00 on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; from 17:30 to 24:00 on Fridays and Saturdays; and 5:30 to 1 a.m. on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.
In addition to low-energy lamps based on LED technology, “CML always strives to ensure that the latest energy-saving technologies are used, either through the use of more efficient materials or through the use of renewable energy sources in the production process.”
The Lisbon Chamber also emphasized that the Christmas Illuminations initiative is a moment when many merchants hope to expand their areas of business in order to “achieve a bigger and better commercial offer, and for this it is important to promote mechanisms that contribute to increased traffic in the streets and in shops.” .
“Christmas lights have become one of the highlights of stimulating trade in Lisbon and represent a tradition deeply rooted in all those who live and work there, taking on added significance due to the large number of tourists and visitors who come every year at this time. they visit the city,” the municipality emphasized.
Within the framework of the protocol with UACS, the Municipality of Lisbon, together with the associated organizations of the sector, is responsible for promoting and supporting the development of activities and events related to economic activities, as well as the dynamization of public space.
To celebrate Christmas, the chamber will install a traditional Christmas pine tree in Praça do Comércio, as well as a 12-meter-tall Christmas ball installation in Largo Camões, which will create lighting effects in different colors.
