Cape Verde prioritizes climate and employment with budget support partners

Climate action and youth employment are priority themes to be developed with cooperation partners, Cape Verdean Deputy Prime Minister Olavo Correia said Monday at the launch of the Budget Support Group’s (GAO) follow-up mission. ).

“These two themes intersect throughout our cooperation with our development partners,” the official was quoted as saying in the government statement.

Like the GAO monitoring conducted a year ago and last June, the work lasts several days, in this case until next Monday, including debates between the government and state budget partners.

Coordination and leadership of the group is delegated to Portugal, which also includes Spain, Luxembourg, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the World Bank and the European Union (EU).

Cape Verde is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change that need to be mitigated, so “it is important to seek international partnerships and technical support to address these challenges and promote environmental sustainability,” said Olavo Correia.

On the other hand, creating jobs for youth and women is “a fundamental objective of the social and economic development of Cape Verde”, which requires “creating opportunities”.

Olavo Correia cited as an example initiatives that promote internship and training programs to provide young people with “qualified skills needed in the labor market.”

“We must create the conditions so that more can be done than we are doing today, on a larger scale and with greater impact on job creation,” he stressed.

The Deputy Prime Minister believes the 2024 State Budget (GB) will contain a reformist role aimed at unlocking the economy’s potential, “strengthening the business environment, promoting investment and enhancing competitiveness”, calling for further support from development partners.

In a mission conducted in November 2022, the group announced $68 million (€65.6 million) in funding for Cape Verde’s OE this year.

GAO’s mission is focused on analyzing the macroeconomic, fiscal, and financial situation, measures implemented and planned to mitigate the financial impact of the war in Ukraine, progress in industry policies, and progress of reforms in various sectors.

These include the areas of poverty reduction, social protection, governance and e-governance, energy transition, blue economy, digital connectivity and transport.
