One person died on Tuesday as a result of a fire that broke out in a house located near Elvas in the Portalegre district, which was completely destroyed by the flames, a Civil Defense source said.
The fire, a source at the Subregional Command for Emergency Management and Civil Protection of Alto Alentejo told Lusa, broke out at about 8:30 a.m. in a house in Monte das Areias, in the geographical area of the parish of San Diego. Bras and São Lourenço, municipality of Elvas.
According to the same source, the deceased was a man about 75 years old, who lived alone in the house and whose body was found burnt.
A Civil Defense source said the house was completely destroyed by the fire and restoration work had been underway since 9:19.
Operatives from the Elvas Fire Department and the PNR were mobilized in the relief operations, totaling 15 personnel, supported by five vehicles.
The circumstances surrounding the fire will be investigated by members of the Evora local criminal investigation unit (ULIC) of the Judicial Police (PJ), a police source told Lusa.
