One of the most popular programs dedicated to the automotive world will end forever after 46 years of continuous broadcasting.
Top Gear’s closure was confirmed on Tuesday BBCwith the British public broadcaster justifying the decision on the basis of a serious accident in 2022 that nearly claimed the life of presenter Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff.
Former captain cricket a member of the English team crashed his Morgan Super 3 (two wheels in the front and one in the rear) while filming another episode of the series.
The accident occurred at Dunsfold Park airfield in Surrey while he was flying over the runway at more than 200 km/h.
Flintoff, who was wearing a helmet and accompanied by a “hanger” during the incident, suffered several facial injuries and broken ribs, but not before having to wait 45 minutes for a helicopter to take him to hospital.
The amateur racer’s injuries were described as not life-threatening at the time, but son Corey said his father was “lucky to be alive.”
Flintoff joined BBC One’s Top Gear in 2019 alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris, with the final season averaging around 4.5 million viewers.
