IL once again celebrates November 25 in Porto, where the current and two previous leaders speak, defending the party president that it is necessary to show that “Portugal has not been hijacked by left-wing radicalism.”
Speaking to Lusa, IL leader Rui Rocha spoke about the sixth Freedom Festival, a rally that will take place on Saturday in Porto to commemorate November 25, 1975.
Stating that IL “is the only party that celebrates November 25 and April 25 with equal enthusiasm”, Rui Rocha noted the importance of the speech at this rally, in addition to himself, by two former presidents who preceded him into office, João Cotrim Figueiredo and Carlos Guimarães Pint.
“This is essentially a sign of party unity, and the signs that we have are also a sign of a huge mobilization for this event on November 25,” he stressed, referring to the need to change the originally planned location because there was none. possibility of registration.
According to the IL leader, “the party also feels it is important to send a signal that Portugal has not been hijacked by left-wing radicalism.”
“IL has a memory, it defends the fundamental values of democracy and is a party united in this celebration, as well as a party united on the path we are now taking towards the next legislative elections,” he stressed.
Rui Rocha believes that there is a “climate of radicalization in political terms” in Portuguese society, especially in connection with the events of November 25.
“Parties such as the PS, which have always considered this date also the date of the founding of democracy, are now embarrassed or even refuse to celebrate November 25, when it is a fundamental date in the history of the PS itself,” he criticized.
According to the liberal leader, this is because the Socialists have “relationships with the radical left parties, the PCP and the Esquerda Bloc, which do not recognize the importance of November 25th, their role and which even have a position that is contrary to the values of November 25th.”
According to Rui Rocha, if on November 25, 1975, it was important to “give a different meaning to the Portuguese political situation, which was not dictated by radicals,” it is important to give this signal again almost five decades later, because they must prevent “this left-wing radicalism taking over Portuguese society.” .
In its statement, IL said that “it has celebrated November 25th since its founding by organizing the Freedom Festival, which is contrary to the ideological option of not celebrating this date publicly.”
“Without November, April would never have been reached. April 25 overthrew the dictatorship, November 25 prevented the imposition of a new dictatorship on the Portuguese,” the party added on the same note.
