An increase in the allowance for military rank and a reorganization of the careers of disabled people in the Armed Forces were approved.

This Thursday, the Council of Ministers approved an increase of 70 euros in the fixed part of the military allowance and a regulation that allows disabled military personnel to be promoted to the next rank, increasing the amount of the pension.

The strengthening of the fixed component of the military allowance has already been announced by Defense Minister Helena Carreiras and represents an increase from 30 to 100 euros per month, which will be retroactive to January 2023.

This allowance is available to all military personnel and consists of a fixed component as well as a variable component set at 20% of base salary.

The government approved a second decree-law “which allows disabled military personnel of the Armed Forces to receive immediate ranks from which they were excluded in 2017.”

What was at stake, according to the executive, was correcting “the inequalities that arose as a result of the legislative measure passed that year” and which included only disabled people in the Armed Forces who were “non-commissioned officers promoted to the rank of sergeant major,” which allowed them “the specified promotion.”

Disabled servicemen who belonged to other branches of the Armed Forces and were in different categories, positions, classes, weapons, services or specialties were excluded from this measure under equal circumstances.

“Now, correcting this situation and ensuring equal treatment, disabled persons in the Armed Forces who were not promoted to the position in which they were released because they were not considered disabled in the Armed Forces on a date before September 1, 1975, will have 180 days, to require a review of the relevant processes from the moment the decree-law comes into force,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

According to the trustee, this measure is “consistent with the Government’s commitment to continue to respect and support disabled people in the Armed Forces” and covers a universe of “about three hundred people”, meeting the “aspirations of the Association of Disabled Persons in the Armed Forces”. Armed forces”.

The PS parliamentary group had such a proposal as part of the discussion of the state budget for 2024, but in the end it was withdrawn.

This morning, during the debate on the budget in the Assembly of the Republic, the Minister of National Defense, Carlos López Pires, announced the measure and noted that “in preparation for the 50th anniversary on April 25, long-demanded justice has been restored.” and more than it should.”
