Antonio Costa and Santos Silva campaign to end violence against women

This Saturday, the Prime Minister called for the prevention and condemnation of violence affecting women around the world, and the President of the Assembly of the Republic called for collective action to end all forms of violence against women.

On social media, Prime Minister António Costa and the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos, celebrated the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is celebrated this Saturday.

“On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we highlight the importance of preventing and raising awareness of violence that affects women around the world,” said António Costa.

According to the Prime Minister, “this is a daily and collective struggle against aggression and fear, against silence and excuses.”

Augusto Santos Silva believed that “the prevalence of inequality, discrimination and misogyny that perpetuate violence against women is a serious violation of human rights” affecting not only victims but also society as a whole.

“Today and every day we demand uncompromising protection of human rights and collective action to eradicate all forms of violence against women,” he called. The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has already marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and announced that the Belém Palace will once again be symbolically illuminated in orange in support of the cause.
