The PSD chairman said today that the Socialist Party government “did not fall because of a trial” but was “rotten” and accused the Socialists of using justice to cover up “political mistakes”.
“I avoided contributing to further degradation of democratic institutions and inciting political intrigue. Most of all are Portuguese,” Montenegro warned at the opening of the 41st PSD Congress.
The PSD chairman said that executive director António Costa, who announced his resignation on November 7, “failed not because of a paragraph” in the statement of the General Prosecutor’s Office, “not even because of the process.”
“The government is rotten due to its indecent and poor appearance in governance. There have been too many lies, too many abuses of power, too much dishonesty and transparency in political life,” he criticized, saying that “this is always the case.” with PS that the state interferes in business.”
And he left a warning: “Portugal is not, has not been and will not be a banana republic.”
Montenegro also accused the PS of trying to use justice in recent weeks “to serve as an alibi for political mistakes.”
“It’s not that we are all under scrutiny, that’s how it should be, but in the right places, with the right rules and at the right time. Judgments about people and institutions are not made in the media, if this is true for politicians, it is also true for judges,” he said.
