Antonio Costa argues that Ukraine has been a “reliable partner” in ensuring food security.

Prime Minister António Costa this Saturday said that “Ukraine is a reliable partner” in achieving the goal of global food security, announcing Portugal’s contribution of five million euros to the Grain from Ukraine initiative.

In a video published on the social networks of the Prime Minister of Portugal and broadcast at the II Grain from Ukraine Summit, held in Kiev, António Costa began by addressing the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky with a confirmation of Portugal’s “strong solidarity” and guarantees of its compliance. will continue to “support Ukraine as long as necessary.”

According to the head of the Portuguese administration, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was also “an attack on one of the world’s most important exporters of grain and agricultural products,” and despite the efforts of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, they managed to use the Russians. “food security as a weapon” and put it at risk around the world.

“But despite all the difficulties, Ukraine has been a reliable partner. Grain from Ukraine is an excellent example of the efforts that Ukraine is making to achieve our common goal – food security,” he praised.

Portugal, according to Costa, fully supports “Ukraine’s intention to expand this initiative to new countries with a very strong emphasis on the African continent.”

“I am therefore pleased to announce that Portugal will provide financial assistance in the amount of five million euros to support the Grain from Ukraine initiative through the World Food Programme,” he said.

On Thursday, Foreign Minister João Gomes Craviño announced to Lusa this five million euro contribution to the Grain from Ukraine initiative, an alternative mechanism for the flow of grain from Ukraine, essentially to African countries, which was approved that day. Council of Ministers.

In the same video, the Portuguese Prime Minister noted that “to truly confront this food crisis,” peace is needed in Ukraine, and reiterated support for President Zelensky’s peace formula, especially regarding food security.

“If we want to create a true global alliance for peace, we need a global alliance for food security. This is fundamental to giving new impetus to peace not only in Ukraine, but throughout the world,” he emphasized.
