Health Minister Manuel Pizarro admitted this Monday that he has not completely lost hope in negotiations with doctors, but believes that trade unions also need to get closer to the government’s positions.
“The circumstances in which we live today are very different: there will be legislative elections on March 10, but even so, I have not completely given up hope for negotiations. Trade unions also need to come closer to our positions,” he is supported.
At the end of the signing ceremony for the transfer of powers in the field of health, which took place in the late morning in the main hall of the Paços do Municipio de Coimbra, a government official told reporters that throughout the negotiation period, the union’s positions were gradually moving closer.
“I often have the feeling that there is relatively little between us. This feeling arises in me now, and we’ll see what the trade unions tell us tomorrow. [terça-feira]”, He said.
Manuel Pizarro explained to reporters that the latest round of negotiations, held last Thursday, was “more delicate” than the previous ones.
“While it is true that government is fully functional, it is equally true that managing the expectations of the legislature is a different matter entirely. There were several measures that we agreed to implement because we were responsible for adapting the NHS. which allowed us to give these measures credibility,” he explained.
A few minutes earlier, Coimbra City Council President José Manuel Silva shared his concerns about the current state of the National Health Service.
“Mr. Minister, as a doctor, I leave the appeal from doctor to doctor so that we can really reach an agreement with doctors so that the National Health Service is not depleted,” he said.
According to the mayor, the SNS is in crisis and needs urgent measures.
“I would say that in matters relating to the NHS there is nothing to diagnose and the treatments that should be given are also known,” he said.
He also told those present that he hoped that next Tuesday the negotiations could be “got a little further” so that “social peace could be brought to the NHS”.
