PS candidate Pedro Nuno Santos this Monday accused the PSD of a lack of confidence, saying that Luis Montenegro’s proposal to raise pensions “didn’t even last two days.”
“The SDP proposal regarding pensions did not last even two days. And Luis Montenegro said that it is “without tricks”!”, commented the former Minister of Infrastructure and candidate for the leadership of the PS on his account on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Pedro Nuno Santos once again stated that “the PSD and its proposals are not credible.”
The controversy surrounding the PSD proposal to raise pensions began shortly after the last speech of Social Democratic leader Luis Montenegro at the congress, which took place on Saturday in Almada.
“We will increase, in accordance with the law, pensions in general, but we will also gradually and until the end of the legislative assembly set the basic amount of the solidarity supplement for older people at 820 euros. This means the following: In 2028, the minimum guaranteed income of Portuguese pensioners will be 820 euros,” defended Montenegro in his speech in Almada.
This Monday, the leader of the Social Democratic Parliament, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, explained in a TSF statement that the proposed increase only affects the solidarity supplement for older people and not all pensions.
The solidarity supplement for older people is a cash support paid monthly to low-income older people over 66 years and four months living in Portugal.
The current cost is no more than 488.22 euros per month, and the criteria that are taken into account when assessing the resources of an older person, according to Social Security, are the income of the applicant applying for the supplement, as well as “the income of the person with whom you are married or live in a de facto union for more than two years” or even “the income of the children for calculating the applicant’s family solidarity component.”
