The PSP trade union asks MAI for clarification regarding the process of acquiring “body cameras”

The Association of Professional Police Officers (ASPP/PSP) on Tuesday asked the Secretary of the Interior for clarification on the process of acquiring body cameras for the PSP, questioning the reasons why NCIS has already received the cameras.

“Our question is to understand why they [Polícia Marítima] they succeeded, but it was impossible on the PSP. It was important for the minister to come and say something about this,” ASPP President Paulo Santos told Lusa.

This reaction from the ASPP came on the day that the Marine Police received 112 kits consisting of “tasers” (non-lethal weapons) and “body cameras” (portable cameras for individual use), making it the first criminal police agency in Portugal to receive these cameras even before the PSP and GNR, and the Minister of the Interior José Luis Carneiro announced in April the delivery in November of the first 2,500 cameras for these police forces.

However, problems in the tender for the purchase of a platform that will manage and store information collected by PSP and GNR “body cameras” are delaying the delivery of handheld cameras for personal use, and it is unknown when this will happen.

“The minister you passed through emphasized this acquisition and made several statements to consider it acquired. The truth is that this issue is being addressed in court, and it was important to know what happened with the competition or with the procedures for equipping PSP with this equipment,” said the president of the largest public safety police union.

For Paulo Santos, it is important that Minister José Luis Carneiro “says something about the process and explains what is at stake.”

The union leader considered it important to unblock the situation so that “the process becomes a reality,” since the use of body cameras is associated with “transparency in police incidents, the accuracy of the facts and can be an interesting tool for the police.” and citizens.”

“One gets the feeling that the minister did not closely follow either the process or the speeches of those responsible for the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in court. If he knew how the process was going, he would have already said something, or at least I have already tried to force people who testify in court on behalf of MAI, not to say what they said.”

On Tuesday, NCIS received 112 kits consisting of stun guns and body cameras, but is awaiting permission to use them, namely from the National Data Protection Commission.
