Rains in Angola have caused the death of five members of one family in the last 24 hours

The total rainfall in Angola over the past 24 hours indicates five deaths, all family members reported in the province of Kwanza Norte, a spokesman for the National Civil Protection and Fire Service said.

Félix Domingos said that the provinces of Moxico, Cabinda and Cuanza Sur also recorded heavy rains with impassable streets and flooded houses, stressing that the province of Luanda presents a very alarming situation in terms of infrastructure.

According to him, deaths were recorded in the municipality of Kazengo, Kwanza Norte province, as a result of the collapse of a wall.

A spokesman for the National Civil Protection and Fire Safety Service stressed that the rains that are falling almost throughout the country this month are atypical “because they were not normal”, and forecasts from the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics of Angola indicate that “this there will be a lot of rain” and there will be strong winds.

In Luanda, the capital of Angola, the deputy commander of the civil protection and fire safety service of the province, Bravo Mendes, stressed that the floods of the last 24 hours did not lead to deaths or injuries, as is usually the case, mainly due to drowning, dragging or electrocution. .

“It is not normal that in November there are rains of the volume and intensity that we are recording. There were moderate to intense rains for almost 12 hours, and they affected the entire territory of the province of Luanda,” he said. .

Bravo Mendes said that preliminary data, which continues to be updated, shows that 2,056 houses have been flooded, affecting more than 10,000 people, 92 roads are blocked, impassable and flooded, and there have been cases of flooding in churches, hospitals, police stations, schools, in total 16 infrastructures.

The municipality of Viana was hit the hardest, followed by Kilamba-Kiashe and Talatona.

In turn, the Deputy Governor of Luanda for the Technical Sector and Infrastructure, Cristino Ndeitunga, emphasized that the heavy rains created serious problems for the authorities related to the flooding of roads, especially secondary and tertiary roads, as well as structural ones, namely residential buildings. and access to social services.

According to Cristino Ndeitunga, intensive work is being carried out as part of the province’s basic sanitation program, including intervention in watersheds to increase their capacity and conditions for their release in case of overload.
