Prime Minister António Costa will attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) this Friday with an agenda focused on financing climate change adaptation and mitigation measures, as well as the opening of the first Portuguese pavilion.
On the first of two days of COP28, the Portuguese head of government will attend the opening of the World Climate Action Summit, which brings together world leaders, and in the afternoon he will preside over the opening of the Portuguese pavilion. .
For the first time, Portugal has an autonomous pavilion (it has so far participated as part of the European Union Delegation), a debut that, according to the Prime Minister’s Office, represents a strengthening of the country’s institutional presence at climate summits. thereby fulfilling the commitments made last year at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
According to the program published by the office of Prime Minister António Costa, the agenda will mainly focus on financing climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Today, a Financial Commitment Agreement was signed with the UN Green Climate Fund to support developing countries, as well as an addendum to the debt reconversion memorandum between Portugal and Cape Verde, which provides for participation in the climate fund in the amount of 12 million euros. a sum that was to be used to pay off Cape Verde’s debt to Portugal.
The Prime Minister will also attend an event on the same theme as Sao Tome and Principe, in a project similar to that celebrated in Cape Verde, and at the end of the day he will attend the Zayed Sustainable Development Awards Ceremony.
Antonio Costa will speak at the leaders’ summit on Saturday and then take part in a roundtable on climate change mitigation.
The Prime Minister arrived in Dubai, United Arab Emirates today, accompanied by the Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Environment and Climate Action, and the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Action.
Starting Sunday, the Portuguese government at COP28 will be represented by secretaries of state from various sectors, with Environment and Climate Action Minister Duarte Cordeiro returning to Dubai on the 9th before the end of the summit.
Representatives from nearly every country in the world are meeting in Dubai on Thursday at COP28, where the first global assessment of eight years of climate action will take place. The closing of the 28th climate summit is scheduled for the 12th and may be extended in connection with the final negotiations.
