According to sources, Colonel Vitor Chongo “and several other soldiers” of the National Guard were detained by military police after armed clashes between the National Guard and the forces of the Presidential Palace Battalion, which began early this Friday morning. . -fair.

The clashes occurred while the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Biage Na Ntan, is outside the country.

In the capital of Guinea-Bissau, gunshots that began around 1:20 a.m. continued for several minutes and were heard again shortly after 7 a.m., stopping around 9:00 a.m.

According to reports reaching Lusa, both times the shots echoed throughout the city of Bissau and were heard from the vicinity of barracks in the Luanda area and other National Guard installations.

In areas closest to the shooting site, such as Santa Luzia, Luanda, Empancha, there was no movement of vehicles or people in the early morning and some businesses were closed, but in other areas of the city the population maintained a normal daily routine, even despite the sounds of gunfire.

Military sources told Lusa that these were clashes between National Guard units and forces from the Presidential Palace Battalion.

The shots came as tensions erupted Thursday evening after the ministry ordered the preventive arrest of Finance Minister Sulemain Seide and Finance Minister Antonio Monteiro.

Both members of the government were taken to the headquarters of the judicial police, where, as several witnesses told Lusa, members of the National Guard took them out of their cells.

Government officials are being investigated for paying six billion CFA francs (about $10 million) to 11 businessmen through a loan to a commercial bank in Bissau.

Minister Souleymane Seydi was heard in Parliament on Monday, where he confirmed the loan request and also stated that the entire process is in accordance with the law, and also confirmed that this is a normal procedure between the governments of Guinea-Bissau.

Soon after the case was reported, the prosecutor’s office conducted searches and seized documents in the Ministry of Economy and Finance, as well as in the bank that issued a loan for settlements to businessmen.

Since last week, several heads of the Ministry of Economy and Finance have already been interrogated, and today the two main people responsible for this institution were arrested.

Souleymane Seydi and António Monteiro are the leaders of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which heads the PAI-Terra Ranca coalition in government, along with the Social Renewal Party (PRS) and the Workers’ Party of Guinea (PTG). ) and five other small political entities.

Madem G15, the party supporting the President of the Republic, Oumaro Sissoko Embalo, and the Assembly of the United People – Democratic Party of Guinea-Bissau (APU – PDGB) are the only opposition parties in parliament.
